New House Front

Enjoy! :)Stuart

So where am I at?

Hi all,

I figured it’d be pertinent to post an update as to what I’m actually doing now.

I’ve graduated. Yes, after 4 long years I graduated in Bachelor of I.T. with a Major in Information Systems. The ceremony was nice although I get the impression that unless you’re actually a graduand that it’d be rather boring. After doing the whole ceremony thing I went and had some photos taken which I have yet to order and dispatch. Once they arrive I’ll send a bunch to my grandparents. 🙂

Christmas was good fun. I spent most of it at Sally’s parents place and had a fairly quiet Christmas by comparison to 2003. I met up with Paul, Gab, Mum & Rod on Boxing day. Was good fun and we went for a swim in Paul’s pool. Once again, a fairly quiet affair which is what I was hoping for anyway. On New Years eve I went out to lunch with Dad and we had a nice long chat. It was good being able to chat so freely to him again having only just having regular conversations again in the past 6 months. On the 3rd I met with Dad & Joanne. Joanne was a lovely lady and we had a really good dinner with them. She also gave Sally and I a piece of jewellery from her store in Canada. Overall, the Christmas -> New Years week was very enjoyable indeed. With the down side being the moving….

Yes, we’ve now moved from our flat of 2 years. Sally & I have moved out on our own (Stephen is now living with his parents again) into a nice house in Ashgrove. I’ll try and get some photos but basically it’s a 2 bedroom + Study place with polished woodfloors. It’s a refreshing change to be in a house after being in a flat for so long (+ the 2 years I spent in a college room). The ability to hear nature so readily and Ashgrove’s very high greeniness (if that’s a word :-|) makes me enjoy this suburb more and more. It also seems to contribute to me waking up earlier than I usually did in the flat.
In work related news, I’m currently on permanent contract basis at a large Brisbane web host. The cluster environment I built has been in testing for about a month now and is fairly rock solid. I have to tie up some loose ends and hand in my final report but then we’ll be back to a maintenance phase of the project. Should be very fun indeed.

I’ve also taken over/create a number of new projects too. Including BlogMe, HostTalk & Freespacechat. I’m attempting to diversify the type of services we offer to generate a few extra revenue streams. Sally’s Recipe website also hasn’t been left out with a new address ( and an overhaul in the pipeline.

Serverpeak has heavily diversified it’s product offerings. We released Australian dedicated servers a 3 months ago now and they’ve now sold out. It was a very quick growth so I’m happy to simply let the servers stay as they are for the time being. Last week we released U.S. Dedicated & VPS services too. Having formed a number of close partnerships with FortressITX & Transnexis it means we were able to obtain sizeable discounts which we could obviously pass onto our customers.

I’ve also overhauled Seekbrain (as you know). I upgraded to the WordPress publishing software for a few reasons:

– Better comment/ping spam filtering
– Cleaner interface for publishing
– Seems to be a LOT more stable
– Doesn’t have the strange licensing that TypePad adopted
– I use Multiblog on so I thought the best thing to do would be to convert to the same WordPress backend.

On top of that I’ve cleaned up the main directory & migrated the gallery to Gallery2. Gallery2 is still in heavy development but it has been released as stable. I was so far behind in versions I first had to upgrade to the latest Gallery1 version THEN migrate appropriately.

Finally, I think I’m going to move the RPM announcements etc. back here. It seems to be the best location for such releases and since it’s already setup as a blog it makes it easy to announce with detracting away from sellable products as is the case on Serverpeak.

Well that’s about it from me. I haven’t posted such a huge update in quite some time so I thought it’d be a good idea. Hope this message finds all the readers in good health. Until next time, adios! 🙂

And we’re still waiting… After FINALLY getting them to hook up a KVM I try and traceroute out and guess what, I can’t hit anything PAST their router. I mean WTF?!

1) We lodge a reboot ticket
2) They blame it on us
3) We hook up a KVM
4) We inform EV1 their router isn’t routing
5) We wait.. and wait.. and wait….
6) [UPDATE] An alias on a seperate subnet works but the first IP doesn’t. AND THEY’RE STILL saying it’s me.. Oh for god sake, i wonder if I feed them some bananas if the monkeys will actually listen?

3hrs… 3 fucking hours.. And it’s 8am.. I’m tired and pissed off that:

a) It’s not really my problem, it’s EV1s
b) I dislike early wakeups, especially when it isn’t me.

The current situation

I’ll put it bluntly, EV1Servers ( suck. They just suck. You ask for a reboot and it’ll take 20 minutes. In the current case, we asked for a reboot at 5:30am my time. At 6:20am they finally get back to us and say “Upon investingating your server it was discovered that there may be a configuration issue involved here. “.

Well that’s FANTASTIC EV1. If I’d known that an hour ago we could have had a KVM hooked up and more than likely (given their lack of technical experience) had the server back online. SO, now it’s 6:45am and I’m still waiting. I just don’t get this sort of attitude. Why would you work for a hosting company if you didn’t actually give a shit about hosting? It’s like a car salesmen trying to sell me the new Mazda MX5 when he doesn’t even have his drivers license.

Go back to 7-11 and give me a tech who knows wtf he is doing.. *sighs*

I was awake for 36hrs.. 😐

Then I slept for nearly 12.. Ahh, felt good.. Got my assignment done though now I’m studying for an exam tomorrow… THEN I’ve got an assignment to do for CSSE3004.
